- days = (target_date − today) converted to days. If the target is in the future, you get days remaining; if it's past, a negative number tells you days elapsed. How It Works
The calculator normalizes both dates to midnight (00:00:00 local), computes the millisecond difference, and divides by 86,400,000 ms per day. If the target is after today, the result is positive; if before, negative. Math.ceil ensures any partial future day shows as a full day remaining. Weeks = days / 7 and months ≈ days / 30.44 (Gregorian average). DST transitions don't affect day counts because both dates are normalized to the same wall-clock midnight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake: Confusing 'today' with 'midnight tomorrow'
Solution: The calculator normalizes both dates to midnight. A target of 'later today' shows as 0 days (today) rather than 1 — if you need hour-level precision, use the Countdown Calculator.
Mistake: Relying on month counts for legal deadlines
Solution: 'About 2 months from today' is ambiguous — the calendar-month equivalent may be 1 or 2 days off. For legal deadlines, count days explicitly and convert to a calendar date.
Mistake: Ignoring DST-crossing spans
Solution: The day count is correct across DST because both dates are anchored to midnight local. But if you're also displaying hours or planning around wall-clock times, DST can shift the effective time of an event by one hour.
Mistake: Using past-date outputs for current tenure
